CSN Bay Area – Tommy Wingels has officially signed a three-year, $7.4 million contract extension with the San Jose Sharks. The contract carries a cap hit of approximately $2.47 million annually.

News of the extension was originally reported over the weekend by CSN California’s Brodie Brazil. The Sharks are expected to make the announcement shortly.

The contract represents a nice raise for Wingels, who is coming off of a breakthrough season in 2013-14. The 26-year-old, who had 16 goals and 38 points in 77 games last season, just completed a two-year, $1.55 million deal. The Evanston, Illinois native led the Sharks with 218 hits.

Wingels was qualified as a restricted free agent on June 30.

Maybe this is an upward momentum shift for the Sharks off season, which has been much maligned over the John Scott signing, the creation of the Ice Girls Team as well as the fact of nothing major happening in regards to Thornton and or Marleau.

I’ll say this much, Tommy Wingels is a grinder. He gets in deep and gets after the puck in the offensive zone, and as you can tell from his team leading 218 hits, he’s not afraid of contact. Watching many games last year, it was usually Wingels who would create the hit or the opportunity when the team was down. He can put the puck in the net from time to time and is a motivated player. At a hit of 2.4 a year for a 26 year old, that’s not a bad deal. Glad to see him back.
