Kaepernick just got paid
CSN Bay Area – The 49ers reached a mega-deal with quarterback Colin Kaepernick through the 2020 season, the team announced Wednesday.
The six-year extension includes more than $60 million in guaranteed money, a source said. The total package of the deal can reach $126 million. Kaepernick is scheduled to take part in a press conference at 2:30 p.m. at 49ers headquarters in Santa Clara to announce the deal.
“Colin’s hard work and dedication have played an integral role in the recent success of the 49ers organization,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement. “His work ethic, leadership and on-field production have positively influenced our team, and we look forward to his continued growth in all areas.
“Our organization always looks to reward our players for their contributions and commitment to the team. Colin’s agents, Scott Smith and Jason Bernstein, along with Paraag Marathe and Brian Hampton, should be commended for working diligently to reach an agreement.”
Kaepernick was scheduled to enter the final year of his original four-year, $5.129 contract he signed as a second round draft pick in 2011.
Well the timing was right and maybe the market dictated the money was right but good lordy did Kap just get paid in an absurd way. Granted, this is a guy who has been a run first QB with not a bevy of wide receivers available but now he does so it’s put up or shut up time. 49ers fans should just hope he stays in the pocket because as we’ve seen with Michael Vick, those injuries and concussions add up. Sure Mike Vick is older, but they would’ve started to accrue a couple years earlier if that little dogfighting suspension didn’t happen.
Let’s also take into account that defenses are going to absolutely want to demolish him even more. Not to say they didn’t before, but I think there’s more incentive to wanting to sack a $100 million player as opposed to one on a rookie deal even if they’re the same person. That’s not to say he isn’t worth the money, he’s worth a good lot of it but now he’s gotta start really earning it, with Super Bowl trips being the status quo. Tough to live up to but that’s why he’s getting the money to do it. I’d say it’s too much but he’s finished his rookie deal and taken the team to the super bowl and a conference championship. Good time to lock it up, but maybe 5 years would have made more sense? Either way, do you Kap, just try not to have any chicks scream rape or that they’re Jesus when on the road because now they know how much you’re really making.
